The Cactus Blossoms with Lady Apple Tree Presented by 105.5 The Colorado Sound are coming to Velvet Elk Lounge on April 18th. Doors open at 7:00 PM, and the show kicks off at 8:00 PM, all for $20 (fees included).
At its best, harmony duo singing can transform simple math into a magic trick. One plus one, instead of equaling two, suddenly yields an unexpected third thing. An upper-case ONE. A universal hum. A deep vibration that encompasses two different points of view. On their latest release, Every Time I Think About You, brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum, aka The Cactus Blossoms, once again prove themselves to be among the most adept – and distinctive – modern practitioners of that magic. But like any great magician, The Cactus Blossoms can’t – or won’t – fully explain the illusion they create. “Harmonies are a big part of our sound, but in some ways they’re the part we focus on the least,” says Burkum. “We put most of our attention and energy into the songs themselves and then the harmonies just happen.”
Lady Apple Tree is the project of LA-based singer-songwriter Haylie Hostetter. Originally from Northern California, Hostetter moved to Los Angeles in her pursuit of music and has contributed to releases and performances from Sam Burton, Drugdealer, Sylvie, Caleb Landry Jones, and Alex Amen while writing and recording her own material. The first, and earliest, batch of this aforementioned material arrived in September 2023 in the form of a self-titled, self-released EP. A collection of eight original songs produced and recorded with friends in an abandoned recording studio in the Santa Monica canyons, the EP is a fresh blend of a variety of stylistic influences, ranging from Folk Pop and Psychedelic Folk to ‘70s Cosmic Americana and Countrypolitan, and serves as a first taste of Hostetter's songwriting and vocal capabilities.
